GUANGZHOU: Teenager Zhai Yujia equalled the world record as China swept the men’s 10m Running Target event of the Asian Games shooting competition on Tuesday.

Zhai, who turns 18 in February, led from start to finish to take the individual title with a score of 590, drawing level with German Manfred Kurzer’s world mark at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Zhai’s performance was two points clear of Asia’s previous best of 588 by compatriot Yang Ling at Lahti, Finland in 2002.

Jo Yong-Chol of North Korea and Jeong You-Jin of South Korea were locked on 572 points behind Zhai, but the North Korean won the shoot-off 19-17 to claim the silver medal.

The Chinese team of Zhai, Yang and Gan Lin proved too strong for their rivals in the team event, firing a combined round of 1,718 points.

North Korea finished 20 points behind with 1,698 on way to the silver medal, while Kazakhstan took the bronze with 1,691.

China’s twin golds took their overall tally to 12 from 21 shooting events completed so far. South Korea have eight golds and Kazakhstan one. -AFP
